We waited 3 years for this

February 28, 2010

So once upon a time I fell in love with a little show called American Idol. I was a senior in high school, Kelly Clarkson was amazing, and this jerk Simon Cowell was hilarious to listen to. Nine years later, I’m still here.

The idols have come and gone but have always made their way into my little pop-culture obsessed heart. During season 7, we really took things to a new level with the battle of the Davids; my roommate Courtney felt an immediate and intense love for David Cook and the rest was history. Last year I connected to Adam Lambert so much that every idol from here until the end of time will merely pale in comparison.

We put our names on the list to get tickets to an American Idol taping in 2007. Every season that came and went we waited to see if we’d get The E-mail letting us know we had been chosen for tickets.

Well. On Friday night, Courtney ran down the stairs screaming “Shut up shut up shut up!!!”

She opened her e-mail and read to me the words from God himself:

“Due to your place on the waiting list, we are notifying you of seat availability to three tapings of American Idol next week! On Tuesday, March 2nd we are taping the full dress rehearsal of the final 10 girls and on Wednesday, March 3rd we are taping the full dress rehearsal of the final 10 guys. The full dress rehearsal is a taping of the entire show including all performances and Ryan Seacrest. The only thing you don’t see in the rehearsal is the judge’s comments. In addition, after the dress rehearsal you may join the standby line for the live taping of American Idol that night. The standby line is there in the event that guests and ticket holders do not show up to the event by the scheduled time. In this case, we will admit people from the standby line as space permits. Admission is not guaranteed. The third taping next week is Thursday, March 4th and is the live results show with a special performance by Danny Gokey!”

Unfortunately, this calls for a degree of spontaneity I’m not sure I have.

Reasons to go:

1. I love American Idol and have waited three years for this moment to arrive.

2. It’s Simon’s last year.

3. Life is short, why not just fly to LAX on Tuesday and come back on Wednesday?

Reasons not to go:

1. Long flights in short amount of time.

2. Dress rehearsal performances only; maaaaybe getting tickets to the live show if we wait around.

3. Class/work conflicts.

What do I do? Do we stay or do we go?

Once in a lifetime experience, or absolutely crazy irresponsible decision?

Go!!! You’ll regret it if you don’t. The odds of getting into the live show on a week night/school night might be higher, especially this early in the season… Plus, you get to see more people vs later in the season as well…

    Unfortunately, 2010 Laura has 2009 Laura’s debt.
