There’s never enough time!!

March 2, 2010

Cue the Pointer Sisters.

OK, but seriously, this article freaks me out beyond belief, knowing what I know about axes and earthquakes and fault lines and space and orbits and ellipses and revolutions: The Chilean earthquake stole part of our day.

According to the CNN article (which, btw, has a ridiculously sensationalizing headline), scientists at NASA say that the earthquake tipped the Earth’s axis a bit.

“The change is negligible, but permanent: Each day should be 1.26 microseconds shorter, according to preliminary calculations. A microsecond is one-millionth of a second.”

OK, so I know that this isn’t like a minute shorter, or a second shorter, or even a half-second shorter. But this is really messing with my mind, here. Earthquake in Southern Hemisphere; length of Earth’s rotation around itself, shorter.

“The quake should have moved the Earth’s figure axis about 3 inches (8 centimeters). The figure axis is one around which the Earth’s mass is balanced. That shift in axis is what may have shortened days.”

This is just crazy talk.

I hate you, physics. I really really do.
